Big House in the Country Ukulele Weekend - NEW DATE 11-14 January 2019
AN UNFORGETTABLE LIFE EXPERIENCE - £305 PER PERSON FOR A THREE NIGHT, FULL BOARD BREAK. PLEASE NOTE DATE CHANGE FROM PREVIOUS YEARS.
(SORRY - ALL ROOMS HAVE SOLD OUT - DAY TICKETS ARE STILL AVAILABLE)
An excellent ukulele break for 3 nights, with full board accommodation and entertainment provided, centering around the world famous Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain! Yes, George Hinchliffe's fabulous ensemble will be performing in the ballroom of our host hotel, and staying over so you can meet these amazing ukulele stars. There's a full programme of ukulele playing, teaching and concerts to enjoy - together with fantastic food and a big hotel, exclusively booked in its entirety for our party!
FRIDAY 11 JANUARY
Check in opens at 3pm, and the bar opens for informal jamming. We'll enjoy a buffet at 7pm, followed by an open mic night, and jig to some traditional tunes (with a twist) with UkuCeilidh!
SATURDAY 12 JANUARY
After breakfast, Percy Copley will take us through a workshop, after which The League of Ukulele Gentlemen will take over for their 'Rock n Roll' workshop. These are included for all, at no extra cost. Then, after a light lunch, we'll have a big strum and singalong to provided songbooks, accompanied by Andy Webster and local uke group, Ukes Akimbo. We'll then hear more from budding open mic performers and enjoy a hot buffet meal before the main event of the day.
In the evening, the spectacular Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain, who have played at Carnegie Hall, The Royal Albert Hall and Sydney Opera House, will take to the much more intimate stage of the Big House Ballroom! Afterwards, you'll be able to meet members of this brilliant group.
If you still have energy left, we’ll have our late night speakeasy open, with poker tables, music and magic. Tim Smithies from Dead Mans Uke will be our host of this unique late-night event!
SUNDAY 13 JANUARY
After breakfast, The Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain will again be on stage, this time, performing a big singalong we can all join in, after which they'll take us through a workshop together. We'll then have a tasty lunch to set us up for the afternoon.
You can then choose to work off all that food, either by joining a guided walk or take part in Jon 'Magic Hips' Hammond's salsa class. Alternatively there's loads of space for jamming! We'll then have time to retire to get ready for the Gala dinner in the restaurant (where you can get your best suit or frock on if you fancy!) This will be a Scottish themed meal, even down to going into dinner to the tune of the bagpipes. We’ll conclude with performances from Percy Copley and The League of Ukulele Gentlemen, with guest artist collaborations!

Single - rooms. We understand that single rooms are a problem. The hotel doesn't have many and some of those they do have are used by the band members. The UOGB are used to playing very large venues, and while they generously attend this event, the price is of course a bit higher. The event, if it sells out, covers the costs - without making a profit. We feel that the price of the three nights is really about as high as we can put it - so it all just works out.
This leads to a problem if we were to offer twin rooms, with as single supplement, as it isn't so much the food that a single person would save that is an issue - but the fact that we need to make a certain amount per room to pay for the band. If we were to offer a single person a single room, we would need to make the price £390, £85 more than a single room or person sharing. This is because we need to make £85 from every bed, if you want to put it that way, to cover the costs.
We can do this if you like - but wanted to give this explanation first - rather than just advertise some twin rooms with a single person supplement, as it would look like we were overcharging single people, whereas the true picture is simply that we have to cover costs to make the event sustainable going forward.
If you understand this position, and would like to book a twin room with single person occupancy for £390 - please send an enquiry on our CONTACT US page. We'll then provide a discount code to bring the price to £390.
Very sorry the incovenience.
P.S. I have had some interest from people who are travelling singly but would be prepared to share. If you would consider this, let me know and I'll put you in touch!
