B-STOCK Snail SR-05T Solid Acacia Top Tenor Ukulele
This uke has had a bit of damage around the edge, which has been filled in. Filled in well, but visible (see picture). As a result it has a healthy reduction.
I’ve had a longstanding relationship with Snail, who made the Omega Zedro and Klasiko series of ukuleles that I commissioned while working for Omega Music. Even then, some years ago now, their design led to an interesting and sonorous tone that raised them above the average. Over the years they’ve continued to improve, as has the general standard of ukes on the market, leaving them still holding their heads high as an interesting, good-value alternative to mainstream brands.
This is a solid koa top tenor, although I suspect that description doesn’t mean Hawaiian koa, but ‘Asian koa’, in fact, acacia. Nothing wrong with a solid acacia top however, and this model is loud, crisp, clear and harmonically rich. It is definitely more interesting in sound than many models of a similar price - making it lovely for picking and melodies, which sound sweet and well… lovely, for want of a better word!
The back and sides are laminate acacia. Again, back down memory lane, I remember the Omega Klasiko ukes and ordering two different samples, a solid top version and one with all solid tonewoods. In the end, I opted for the laminate back and sides version as I could barely tell the difference.
The SR-05T ukulele has closed geared tuners, which appear to be very robust, a comfort edge (no more red marks on your strumming arm), fluorocarbon strings and a lovely ebony fingerboard and interestingly shaped bridge.
The fretboard is nice and spacious making the playing of it as nice as the sound that comes out too! The Snail SR-05T is equipped with a basic gig bag.
