Kala 13th Anniversary Limited Edition Red Tenor Ukulele
Kala are no strangers to a special edition to celebrate an anniversary. Their last, for their tenth anniversary was a handsome all solid acacia instrument. This time around, they’ve gone for something more affordable, going for striking looks over expensive solid woods. It’s not quite glow-in-the-dark, but the vivid red is close!
Ukes with painted finishes can be hit and miss, but in this case, it is very neat and well applied, with a satin finish. The looks are further enhanced by the cream binding and black and white purfling - which also circles the soundhole. The KA-THRTH-T model has cream buttons to match the binding, Aquila strings, open geared tuners and walnut bridge and fingerboard.
The saddle and nut are Graphtech TUSQ, a synthetic bone - and this, and perhaps the finish to a degree - help the sound to project strongly, with plenty of volume and a nice even tone across the strings.
The thirteenth anniversary model from Kala is limited to a 600 run worldwide. What does this mean? Well, with Kala being the world’s biggest specialist ukulele brand, maybe this will be collectable in the future - the Maccaferri Islander of the future. Maybe it won’t. But if doesn’t, at least you’ll have a striking looking, impressive sounding uke (and good quality gig bag) in your collection.
