This is a nice looking uke, but the Enya EUC-X1C is different to most ukuleles in that it isn’t made of wood. It looks like wood, but it is in fact high pressure laminate with a satin ‘koa’ veneer - although the veneer isn’t wood either, it’s a photographic print. In a way my description so far might sound a bit disparaging, but that’s not my intention - there’s a place for this kind of uke, and chief amongst the positives is that it’s extremely hard-wearing, not prone to cracking or warping, even in hot conditions.

The other factor is the tone, which is more rounded and mellow that a regular uke. There’s a soprano pineapple uke in this series, and that one is the same, but a touch on the quiet side. While this EUC-X1C’s larger concert body gives decent volume (not loud, but not quiet either). The fluorocarbon strings give a pleasant sparkle in the trebles, but it’s definitely warm and mellow as opposed to full of power and projection. Which does offer something a bit different - especially as many who consider this Enya might do so for it to be a tough unit they can take on their travels.

Like all the Enyas I’ve come across, I find the action a little high and will lower that before I send it. (Just be wary of celebrity YouTubers who tell you they all come with a low action - it just isn’t the case, naming no names). The tuners are robust and smooth-turning and two strap buttons are fitted as standard. The nut width is 36.5mm.

You also get a decent padded gig bag and a zip up pouch containing a plethora of accessories, including spare strings, picks, a finger shaker, a cloth to keep it clean, a capo, a ukulele strap and a tuner. Of course, they could have left these out and made it £20 cheaper, but it’s there and worth mentioning it as there’s quite a lot of stuff there.
