The Enya EUT-Moon BU EQ is the variant of Taimane Gardner’s signature series with a dark blue stained subtle sunburst finish and Enya’s AcousticPlus system, which allows you to use some effects with, or even without an amp.
These attractive tenor ukuleles feature a white abalone moon motif underneath the soundhole, and have an all solid mahogany body. That body is quite thin, at just over half the body depth of a regular uke, but that certainly doesn’t dampen down the volume. There’s loads of that, plus good projection and clarity - with the solid mahogany just pulling the overall tone from bright into a ‘medium bright’ level. Where all the sound comes from is beyond me, but the Enya EUT Moon really packs a punch.
Taimane is a Hawaiian ukulele virtuoso and I know her well, having toured around the UK with the a few years back. She’s extremely good company and I would have been surprised if she’d entered an arrangement with Enya without plenty of input into how the ukulele would turn out. Thankfully, I can just picture her playing an instrument like this - it suits her modern, vibrant style - and it’s not a case of sticking your name on the headstock and that’s the end of your involvement. Rather it seems to fit her style perfectly.
The EUT-Moon BU EQ is fitted with D’addario Titanium strings (that’s the brand, they’re nylon and not titanium!), which work well here. Not always my favourites but I can’t argue with how they sound on this. The nut width is a generous 38mm and the tuners, which are geared, closed units, do the job well. It is also supplied with a matching gig bag and strap - plus in the case of this electro ukulele version, a jack to jack lead to connect to an amp.
Onto those electrics then. The AcousticPlus system has reverb, chorus and delay effects, which you can use like a standard electro ukulele, through an amplifier. But you can also use them without an amplifier. I am not quite sure how the technology works, but basically it you can switch the effects on and hear them, quite loudly, in action. There is a rechargable battery which can be charged up with a supplied USB cable.
In the ukulele world, signature models can be a bit hit or miss, but this one seems well thought out, with clear input from Taimane about the look, sound and feel of the uke.
