This is the solid body Flight Centurion tenor electro ukulele, a steel strung ukulele with GCEA tuning (low G), which is an interesting choice for those who want to experiment with more guitar-like sound, while keeping a fingerboard layout more familiar to ukulele players.
This is the Goldtop model, with a gold / bronze finish, modelled on one of the most famous guitar styles (I’ll leave you to work out which, they don’t like you saying what it is!). The finish is nice - not quite reaching the high bar set by similar, more expensive Risa models, but certainly it is pretty to look at!
Before going on to discuss the Flight Centurion in more detail, a word about steel strings and what they’re like to play. You might think, as steel is harder and thinner that regular uke strings that they’d be very hard on the fingers. But the key here is how you play. I’ve often seen ukulele players gripping too hard with steel string instruments, with that tension pulling the strings sharp. So while the material is hard, you need to remember that you only need a light contact between string and fret… so, if you go for one, you need to be light-fingered!
With a solid body (i.e. no acoustic chamber), the unamplified sound, while perfectly audible for quiet practice, isn’t what you would buy one of these for. To get anything other that a quiet noodle out of it, you need to amplify. To this end, there are two dual humbucker pickups (if you’re not familiar, that’s the black things sitting under the strings!). You can use one or other of these, or both at once, for a range of sounds, and can choose which one (or combo) you want with a simple selector switch. Each dual pickup has its own tone and volume control too (that’s why you see four knobs).
This Flight Centurion tenor ukulele has a lot going for it, chiefly the fact that it is affordable. It doesn’t reach those Risa heights for me, but it is half the price, opening up the steel-string experience to more players. If you were to buy me a steel string solid body as a gift, I’d want a Risa. If I had to buy one for you, I’d want to pay the money this Flight costs - if that makes any sense!
The ukulele is provided with a good quality blue padded gig bag too. Action and intonation are adjusted before it comes out - they’re a bit wayward when they arrive, but the necessary work is done before they leave (this is not an instrument to buy from a drop-shipping retailer, they MUST go through a workshop process first!)
You can hear a video demo of the Flight Centurion tenor ukulele (in comparison to the Risa LP tenor) if you click additional info below. It’s a model with a different finish, but that doesn’t affect the tone!
