Following on from the Flight Centurion and Pathfinder ukuleles, Flight have now added another homage to a classic electric guitar design, in the Vanguard tenor electro. This steel strung uke is particularly pretty with it’s trans-black gloss finish, which gives a blue-grey hue through which you can see the wood grain underneath.

Strung with a low G and GCEA tuning, the Vanguard has enough volume for practising quietly at home if played acoustically - but you’ll want (well, you’ll need!) an amp to get it to come alive. Do so and you can get a great range of tones using the pickup selector switch and tone controls (which are very nicely recessed into the body on this model).

The Flight Vanguard has an attractive double cutaway design, and, while it’s a minor point, the position markers down the side of the fingerboard really hit the spot for me! It comes supplied with a good quality blue Flight-branded gig bag and a jack to jack lead too.

The Flight Vanguard ukes look great and play well when given some attention on the workbench. That’s work I’ll carry out, to get it playing nicely and adjusting for better intonation. That takes a little bit of time - so keep that in mind if you see this elsewhere for a bit less from drop-shipping retailers. It really does need some work to get it in optimal condition. And, while it’s a really nice bit of kit - it doesn’t quite hit the heights of the European-made Risa electro ukes. But while you might, if you study closely, find the odd tiny flaw in the finish, the fact they sound great and don’t cost as much as the Risa models is worth keeping in mind!
