Lets begin by digesting that name, the Kala KA-ASFM-T-C... All Solid Flamed Maple Tenor Cutaway. Once you get past the fact it doesn't sounds very snappy, it tells you a lot. There's an all solid flamed maple tenor here, with a cutaway. You probably could have guessed!

I don't use manufacturer descriptions, and I certainly don't copy them from other shops (though having read that first paragraph you might wonder why!) But in this case, while waiting for this model for the first time, I did watch a video from Hawaii Music Supply, who said something that stuck in my mind - "It's like if mahogany was loud", their reviewer said. This sums the tone up so well I've had to borrow it!

For some reason I have a mental connection in my mind that maple is bright in tone - probably as the colour is similar to spruce, which is very bright sounding. But actually, this ukulele is really mellow - maple has a really sweet, mellow side to it, which is really very pretty.

The KA-ASFM-T-C looks the part too, with that smooth maple looking great under the satin finish, and set off nicely with the purple heart binding and sound hole decoration. The fingerboard is super smooth ebony and the tuners are effective, either side of the slotted headstock, as well as good looking too - with gold gears and black buttons. Of course, there's that sleek looking cutaway to enjoy too.
