The Islander AC-4 has an attractive laminate acacia body, which puts you in mind of a more expensive instrument in appearance – specifically a ukulele from the parent company in Hawaii, Kanile’a. Their Islander range is made in the Far East, using some of the DNA from the premium instruments made in the island state. One of these makes the AC-4 stand out, a wider neck.

The nut width is 38mm, combined with a fairly flat neck profile makes this instrument very playable, particularly with those with larger fingers. It’s hard to find wider neck ukes, if that’s your requirement, without (usually) a larger budget, so these affordable Islanders hit the spot in that respect.

The tone is even and well balanced, with a sound that errs towards subtle warmth, but with enough punch to bring out your melodies in the Aquila strings (though with fluorocarbon strings, you can bring that punch out some more too).
