The Kiwaya KTT-2S is really something. It is certainly not cheap, and neither is it dazzling in its looks. Yet it is so good, so rich and smooth that it offers something really different to the premium end of the ukulele market. This Japanese made all solid mahogany tenor uke is so impressive with its warmth and subtlety, that you don't think, 'it looks plain', you think 'it looks classic'. The sound truly wins you over.
Kiwaya is a 100 year old company that has captured the best aspects from its reproductions of classic vintage instruments, marrying this up with modern precision methods to produce some amazing, well-respected instruments. The KTT-2S is certainly no different in this respect.
It really is hard to pinpoint what is so good about this Kiwaya. It isn't the loudest uke, but its subtle, warm tones seem to wash over you and really help bring emotion into your playing. It is gentle, but giving in its lovely, generously harmonic tones. Even now, in this paragraph, it is tempting me into poetic language in order to try and do it justice - but I'm not sure I can.
The ukulele has a satin finish, and no decoration aside from a very simple soundhole rosette and the gold Kiwaya logo screen printed onto the slotted headstock. It has an ebony fingerboard and bridge, and bone nut and compensated saddle. Fremont black lines are fitted, and they give even more mellow character to the sound.
The 36mm nut, combined with quite a shallow neck profile and a low action makes this instrument really playable. The neck is super smooth, so much in fact that its nice just to stroke it!
The Kiwaya KTT-2S just oozes class and quality. It is a gorgeous thing. More so to the ears than the eyes, perhaps, but gorgeous nonetheless - and something really different in its smooth, mellow tones.
