The BH-8C is a welcome addition to the Snail catalogue, offering about 90% of the quality of sound of their (admittedly lovely) S60C model, at half the price. True, its decoration is much more muted but it look sleek and classy and offers excellent value.
The BH-8C features a solid acacia top, paired with laminate acacia back and sides, under a gloss finish. The wood’s warm tones and grain are attractive in an understated way, and are highlighted with an abalone soundhole rosette and an inlaid wooden flower motif on the soundhole (and just in case you were wondering, there side dots along the neck, so you can still see where to put your fingers!).
Solid acacia can be a touch muted I find, but this Snail much livelier and ‘perky’ than many an instrument made from this material. The sustain is good, and while it does have some of that characteristic smoothness of acacia in sound, it still sparkles nicely in a well balanced tone with good sustain. It’s really rather pretty.
The BH-8C comes with a decent Snail-branded gig bag too, with decent quality geared tuners and Snail’s own fluorocarbon strings. I like the strings at lot and when I commented on them to the UK distributor, he suggested they’d be available in future to purchase separately. Given I think they’re very nice, this is good news.
In all, the Snail BH-8C concert ukulele seems a good instrument for someone looking to step up in quality from a beginner level instrument, without shelling out too much money. It strikes a really good balance between value and sound quality. It’s a good ‘un.
