Snail have been making ukes for a number of years, but only in recent times have they started to gain traction against the bigger brands. They have done this with innovative designs, great quality and simply, by making lovely sounding ukes like this BH-6C concert.

Under the gloss finish, there's a great quality, tightly grained solid cedar top, inlaid with an abalone soundhole rosette. With black and white purfling around the edges and pretty mahogany binding, it looks great - and that's before you factor in the exotic looking laminate ebony back and sides, which are streaked with pale brushstrokes of loveliness.

There's a neat, compact slotted headstock with an ebony cap, and geared tuners with black buttons and gold coloured cogs. The super smooth (and I mean SUPER smooth) ebony fingerboard has an attractive maple flower motif, while the neck features position markers so you don't get lost! The bridge is interesting too, and brings to mind the Batman logo!

Soundwise, the BH-6C doesn't disappoint either. Solid cedar is such a sound choice, (as in a good choice), with a nicely balanced tone across the strings and a pleasing complexity. It is clear and crisp without ever becoming over the top in the brightness stakes. It sings nicely up the neck and chimes well with basic chords too, making it versatile and responsive. And, while it is well pronounced in the trebles, there's a mellow edge when you strike the strings.
