The Uma UK-11ST is a very attractive instrument, with its nicely striped ebony body, with a pretty, wide maple soundhole decoration. It sounds really good too - and is a great example of the theory that laminate ukuleles, if done well, can sound very impressive.
Is there a drawback to the UK-11ST? Well, yes, sort of. It stands up very well to many laminate ukuleles, many of which are the same price and some which are more. But, if you look hard you can find ukes that are better value (including others made by Uma - that are more plain, but less money). However, if you like the look of this one, it is a big step up over many of the ‘pretty-but-dull-sounding' laminate brigade you can find elsewhere.
The Uma UK-11ST kicks out plenty of volume, with nice peaks of brightness and richness balancing out well - for quite an even tone, with lots of clarity and sustain. I’ve played far inferior solid top ukes that cost more - so the laminate body is not a big disadvantage here.
This tenor ukulele comes with a black, branded Uma gig bag, fluorocarbon strings, a 35mm but width and smooth-turning geared tuners.
If you’re on a real budget, something like the Uma UK-05ST will save you a few quid for a very good uke that sounds nice but looks a bit plain. But if you don’t mind spending a bit more for the looks, it’s certainly not a bad price - just not as much of a bargain as others in the Uma ukulele range.
