This is the ‘blue’ version of the Uma UK-20SC. It sounds the same as the plain mahogany version, apart from a see through bluestain, giving a blue-green to the gloss. It’s a blue stain, but the brown of the solid mahogany underneath gives a greenish tinge. I’ve repeated the UK-20SC details below as apart from the colour, it’s the same uke: -
The Uma UK-20SC-BL is a bit of a game changer given the tremendous value for an all solid ukulele at this modest price. It is relatively unadorned with decoration, although there's a well executed abalone soundhole rosette.
Although the tone is interesting and complex, it isn't characteristically 'mahogany' in its character. Perhaps as a result of the tightening of the tonewood by the gloss finish, the sound is quite bright, with plenty of volume and great projection. It's not lacking in depth but is definitely clearer and more crisp than I expected. I like its lively tone, it just wasn't quite what I expected.
There are clear fluorocarbon strings fitted, with a slotted headstock and smooth-turning chrome geared tuners. The rosewood neck is 35mm at the nut, which is unchallenging - given its a very average width.
The Uma UK-20SC-BL is also supplied with an excellent, grey padded gig bag - adding even more value to an incredibly well priced package. If you’ve wanted an all solid concert ukulele but have been put off by the price, this could well be the model for you.
If you click additional info below, you’ll find a video demo of the Uma UK-20SC concert ukulele, and another video featuring this uke as part of a comparison of the Uma range. This one, the UK-20SC-BL, has the same sound as the one in the video.
