Baton Rouge V2-B8 Sun 8-String Baritone Ukulele
The Baton Rouge V2-B8 Sun is a laminate mahogany 8-string baritone. It takes the body shape and of the V2-B, standard 4-string and doubles up the DGBE tuning with a high and low D, high and low G and pairs of E’s and A’s. The result is a rich, deep and yet jangly, sweet tone. The low D and G give you your normal deep baritone sound, while the higher equivalent of both adds an extra layer of sparkly brightness on top. Overall, you still get the depth of a baritone, just with a more complex, layered tone.
The body is fairly plain, but has the laser etching around the soundhole that’s common to other ukes in this Baton Rouge series. And it’s easier to play, I find, than an 8-string tenor ukulele. The tension of the strings feels good, and I’m able to get the action at the nut quite low so it’s not as much of a challenge to play as you might expect.
The V2-B8 has Aquila strings and geared tuners, with a nubone nut and saddle. I suppose you could say it is ‘no-frills’, but the good, honest tone and reasonable price make it an instrument that could really add to someone’s collection, and the sounds they can produce, without breaking the bank.
