Flight Aurora Solid Top Electro Acoustic Baritone Ukulele
The Flight Aurora is one of those instruments that really pleases a ukulele retailer like me. It fills a gap in the market, adding an electro acoustic baritone into the mix with a good quality / price ratio - but it also does that really well. Sometimes you get an instrument that fills a gap and you think, ‘yeah, that’s decent, I like it’, and other times you think, ‘wow, that’s really going to do well because it’s simply a really nice instrument’. The Aurora from Flight Ukuleles is in the latter camp.
This baritone has really nice proportions, with a larger bottom bout, a solid spruce top and laminate rosewood back and sides, both of which look good under a gloss finish. There’s a scooped cutaway too, which gives better access to the upper frets (if you’re feeling adventurous) and simply looks good (if you’re not!). There’s a Double C1U pickup fitted too - which is definitely one of the better sounding pre-fitted units in my opinion - which has tone and volume controls tucked inside the soundhole.
The Flight Aurora baritone comes with a well padded dark red gig bag, has a roomy 38mm nut and comes with D’addario EJ53B DGBE baritone strings. I am fussy with strings and sometimes question the choices made by manufacturers about the strings they opt for - but in this case I am a OK with it. The big body gives a bold, dark, rolling sound, but the wound D and G add a little zing to the mix, preventing the bass from being overbearing. And the spruce top and thinner gauge B and E strings sing sweetly over the top. It’s well balanced, lively but still distinctly ‘baritoney’ - which isn’t a word, but will have to do!
