Kala Contour All Solid Mahogany Baritone Ukulele
This is the Kala KA-CT-SMH-BG, an all solid mahogany baritone ukulele from the contour series. This series is so named because of the accentuated curves of the larger-than-average bottom bout, and a comfort edge. These modern features are good news for Kala fans, who in recent years may have been starved of great excitement and innovation, but can now see that the company are looking at what else in is on the market and giving baritone players a more up-to-date option.
This one is made from all solid mahogany, which, together with the DGBE tuning, gives plenty of warmth. The Kala KA-CT-SMH-BG has a gloss finish and Aquila strings, and these provide some good definition and some nice clarity to the mix. Overall, it’s a really good all rounder, with not too much brightness and not too much dark warmth - but a good balance between the two.
The Kala contour series baritones have a 38mm nut width, geared tuners and are supplied with a nice quality gig bag. The larger body requires this fitted gig bag as it’s a bit too broad to go in any standard hard cases.
Mahogany ukes aren’t naturally the most visually exciting perhaps, but the relative cost of the wood compared to other commonly used timbers means it is very good value. And the maple and rosewood ‘eclipse’ soundhole decoration is a welcome splash of flair.
