This all solid maple Kala KA-ASFM-B-CE is a silky smooth, super-mellow beast. Maple gives volume and depth, with some nice punch too, but what struck me first off was how warm and deep it was. I have decided with mine that I wanted to accentuate these rolling lows and have fitted Worth Brown strings to my stock. So, it’s important to note it does not come from me with the standard set of Aquila strings, but fluorocarbon strings (including unwound, fluorocarbon D and G). This does take away some of the punch and jangle from the standard wound set, but increases that mellowness and finally gives me an easy answer to the question, ‘what’s the warmest sounding ukulele that you have in stock’.

The body has a satin finish and is made from all solid flamed maple (that’s the ASFM part of the code), with a baritone scale (that’s the B), a cutaway (that’s the C) and a build in pickup with tone and volume controls and a tuner, allowing you to play it electroa-acoustically (that’s the E…. those codes might be clunky, but they mean something!). I know that paler woods aren’t everyone’s cup of tea, but the purpleheart binding adds some nice visual interest, as does the slotted headstock.

The Kala KA-ASFM-B-CE baritone ukulele has a 38mm nut width and feels substantial, with maple being fairly dense, it has some weight and heft to it. But it plays really nicely with those smooth fluorocarbon strings and while not the lightest, it seems nicely balanced.
