Kiwaya KBU-1 Baritone Ukulele with Gig Bag
This is the Kiwaya KBU-1 baritone ukulele, from the Japanese company's student series. If you're not familiar with these, they're made under supervision of Kiwaya by a factory in China. The result is an affordable instrument which uses Kiwaya's expertise, with lower labour costs which results, ultimately, in less pain for your wallet!
The KBU-1 is tuned like a regular baritone ukulele, DGBE, with Aquila strings (with the two bass strings being wound). There's an attractive slotted headstock, with the Kiwaya logo in gold, and black and gold geared tuners.
The body of the KBU-1 isn't the largest, especially on the top bout, and I wonder if this is the reason why the sound is quite balanced and, by baritone standards, nice and light and articulate. Of course, it's bassier than a regular uke on account of the tuning, but the sound is really quite crisp.
The bone nut is 38mm and the lower tension on a baritone neck makes it nice and comfortable to play. The KBU-1 also comes equipped with a padded bag.
If you click on additional info below you'll find a video demo of the Kiwaya KBU-1 baritone ukulele. I was going to do this myself, but actually the video, from Kiwaya themselves, is a good, accurate depiction of the model's tone. (Plus the guy playing is better than me!)
