Paul Barnard Wildcat Alpine Spruce and London Plane Baritone Ukulele
This is a UK-made ukulele, built by Paul Barnard, using solid apline spruce and solid London plane on th back and sides - a wood that is subtle in its colour but has a really interesting, almost 3D grain. It’s a satin finish instrument, with the top protected by a near-invisible, thin scratchguard where (obviously!) you strum.
The sound is rich, smooth, soft and expressive. It’s not quiet, and yet it seems subtle somehow, in that smooth, creamy tone. I realise I am giving the impression it’s all roundness and warmth, and while that’s definitely there, the trebles, aided by the solid spruce, ring out beautifully too.
There are loads of different design features that come together really nicely with this instrument, like the subtly shaped headstock with its dark veneer, the plethora of different wood inlays around the soundhole, and the bog boak binding. It really does look handsome.
The Wildcat ukulele comes with a TGI ABS hard case, and this one is fitted with two strap buttons (wood at the base, and a chrome at the heel where it’ll take more stress). The strings are DGBE tuned Uke Logics, fluorocarbon strings and a set that has an unwound G, which perhaps aids that smoothness of sound.
This baritone ukulele has a 38mm nut width, a really comfortable, smooth and not-too-chunky neck and high quality geared tuners. It has a relatively slender body shape - but despite eschewing the trend for bigger bottom bouts, this Wildcat really hits those warm notes perfectly, so it’s no slouch in the bass end of the sound spectrum, despite that sprucey punch at the top.
At the bottom of the page my website features a number of optional add ons which are standard on every page. Here, you have a low G (and low D, in DGBE already(, plus strap buttons on too and a hard case, so you’re pretty much all set.
