Pono ULN4-1 Large Body All Solid Cedar & Acacia Baritone
Pono’s ULN4-1 is larger than a regular baritone, and smaller than their ‘big’ baritone, just under the size of a tenor guitar. It’s strung DGBE, with regular baritone strings (two wound strings and two nylon).
The initial design for this ukulele features an all solid acacia body, but this new edition features a solid cedar top. The predecessor was very warm and smooth-sounding, but possibly a little too warm - with the cedar top here providing a little added bite when strummed. That said, it’s still certainly big, bold and rich-sounding. Particularly when strummed or picked with the thumb, it’s got a such a beautiful tone it’s almost like it has its own built-in reverb.
As you’d expect with Pono, the build quality is fantastic, with this one fitted with gold coloured Grover geared tuners and supplied with a custom gig bag that’s a perfect fit (not to mention tough well padded).
The cedar top is tightly grained, and while cedar can’t help but be plain-looking, the patterining on the solid acacia back and sides is full of contrast and interest. There’s a nice rope-style decoration around the soundhole, with rosewood faceplate and binding around the body too.
The Pono ULN4-1 has as scale length of 21.38 Inches (543 mm) and an overall length of 32 inches (813mm). These dimensions give you plenty of volume, but are still compact enough to fit in a ukulele group’s aesthetic.
