Snail BHC-5B Solid Spruce Top Baritone Ukulele - GCEA Tuning
The Snail BHC-5B is a solid spruce top baritone ukulele, with a really neat build and a fine gloss finish. It is a welcome addition to the range of baritone ukes available, and demonstrates that Snail are listening to the market, which has been strong in interest in this size, with the number of ukes available not keeping up with the pace of that interest. So, having this really nice mid-level baritone is great news.
The tuning is gCEA, with the fluorocarbon strings tuned like a regular tenor uke, with re-entrant high G. If you want a more traditional baritone, I can string this with D’addario Titanium DGBE strings at no extra cost on request - or, if you head to the accessories section, you can add a low G, to make it a GCEA low G uke (if doing this, the Fremont option is a particularly good match).
The top is sold spruce and this is paired with laminate ebony on the back and sides, which is very pretty and makes for a good contrast. At the top of the ebony fingerboard is an attractive and not-too-large slotted headstock, fitted with geared tuners.
Sound-wise, despite the re-entrant tuning it feels different - like you’re playing a baritone , rather than an oversized tenor - with a bigger bass response matched very well with the punchy trebles coming from that spruce. Of course, if you prefer your baritone with DGBE strings or a low G, you’ll get more of that rolling depth. The standard 35mm nut width does lend itself to players already familiar with ukuleles of smaller sizes, making it feel unchallenging and… normal!
The Snail BHC-5B is supplied with a nice grey gig bag with the Snail logo in yellow too.
There’s a video demo of the Snail BHC-5B baritone ukulele if you click additional info below. This shows this instrument in both high and low G, GCEA tuning.
