This Tiny Bass is a short scale precision bass style bass from Japan. The temptation is to use the phrase, ‘bass ukulele’, but like all of these instruments, they’re actually very short scale bass guitars. This bass was probably made primarily with bass guitarists in mind, but it just happens, because of its small size, to fit a ukulele group’s smaller ‘aesthetic’.

This is the gloss finish, trans-white DX-3 model, which partially reveals the flamed maple of the top. It’s a fretted model, with Dogal roundwound strings, made in Italy. The range of tones achieved from the split coil magnetic pickup is impressive, from a harder-edged, treble-heavy sound for solos, to rich, rolling, smooth bassiness with the treble rolled off. I am not a bass player really, although I like to try out a few bass riffs when checking the instruments out - and with this one, with that treble rolled off… well, let’s just say I ‘tested’ it for a bit longer than I intended. Sounds great, and great fun!
