Uluru Hoa Hana All Solid Acacia Baritone Ukulele
This is the Uluru Hoa Hana baritone ukulele made from all solid acacia, an exclusive joint project with Southern Ukulele Store. Seeing a lack of options for baritone ukulele players at the higher end of the quality spectrum, we decided to commission our own from Uluru. Hoa Hana means 'partnership', which seems quite apt given the nature of this project!
This baritone ukulele is either strung GCEA with Living Water fluorocarbon strings, with a low G (as in themy video demo). Or, they're perfectly good with DGBE tuning too, with D’addario strings (and in fact, SUS have opted to offer theirs that way). I usually play using regular uke tuning, but if doing that, feel the low G is essential to make the most of the larger baritone body. If you prefer DGBE, you can select that option when ordering via the dropdown menu.
Uluru make their ukes in Vietnam and have used Vietnamese acacia to make this model, which has a lovely sandy colour, and a straight, pronounced grain. The all solid acacia is separated by maple binding, which matches the heartwood of the acacia nicely. This Hoa Hana baritone has a sleek cutaway shape, with a very pretty shaped end to the fingerboard, which is also bound in maple.
Ebony is used for the fingerboard, bridge and the heel cap, and the whole uke has a perfectly executed gloss finish. There's a compensated bone saddle and a 35mm nut, which is paired with quite a thin neck profile that I find very playable (and unlike many big chunky baritone necks that you sometimes find). There are quality enclosed geared tuners with tactile wooden buttons.
The sound is naturally rich and warm, with a mature and harmonically rich quality which delivers a tapestry of depth punctuates with pretty, delicate and sparkling trebles. The Hoa Hana is versatile too, with a strong performance when playing chords - but enough projection to carry complex melodies and picking patterns with panache too.
The Uluru Hoa Hana baritone series ukuleles are supplied in a hard case (tweed style). You can find a video demo of this model (and the spruce/ ovangkol version) if you click additional info below.
