This is the concert electroversion of the aNueNue Black Whale - a stunning instrument to look at and a stunning one to listen to as well. I’ve used the same description below as the acoustic only version - but note that this one comes with the aNueNue Air Air pickup - a system that combines an undersaddle piezo pickup with an internal mic, allowing you to blend tones between the two with a dial located just inside the soundhole.

The first thing you might notice from the title is that three woods are listed. The concert Black Whale, like its tenor counterpart, has a double top. This is a layer of beautiful looking curly maple on the top, above a layer (you can’t see) of Western red cedar. The overall thickness of the top is the same as a normal uke - with two half thicknesses of tonewood sandwiched together.

The theory behind this sounds a bit bonkers - that you elements of both in the mix of sound. That you’d get smoothness and depth from the maple, and chime and sustain from the cedar. That’s the theory and while I was sure it would sound nice, I wasn’t 100% sure that it would work that way. Except that it really does!

The Black Whale has, as the name suggests, has a series of whales inlaid on the fingerboard and the headstock. Some people like this level of decoration and others don’t. But if you are in the former camp then it is undeniably beautifully done. There’s also a whale’s tale inlaid on the top, maple binding and a gorgeous soundhole decoration. And then a black stain on the maple under a gloss finish.

This aNueNue concert ukulele is fitted with aNueNue Black Water fluorocarbon strings, which have excellent sustain. It has a 36.5mm nut width, and superb rear-facing geared tuners (Gotoh UPT models).

It’s a fantastic, beautiful, musical work of art. And great that they’ve opted to make a concert version when tenor seems to be most popular. Now fans of the concert scale can enjoy the same level of opulence as those who like a tenor.

At the bottom of the page there are some optional extras you can add. These are standard to all ukes on the site, so you can ignore the case options as it comes with a brilliant blue hard case. Low G fitting (I prefer Fremont on a concert) and strap button(s) are also there. This one has a jack socket that doubles as a strap button.
