Kiwaya KPC-5K All Solid 5A Koa Concert Ukulele
I'm going to list the good points and the bad points of this Kiwaya KPC-5K concert ukulele before I go into detail...
Good points - Everything except the price
Bad points - The price
Addressing that bad point first of all... OK, not everyone can stretch to that price for a concert ukulele but anyone who does will get their hands on a truly stunning instrument, with a rich and complex sound that shimmers as much as the wonderful 5A grade koa under an immaculate gloss finish.
Of course, you want to play a uke, rather than just hang it on the wall - but if you only looked at it, you'd get plenty out of it as it is simply gorgeous. The koa is, of course, the star, which amazing flaming and patterns. This is only highlighted by the contrasting maple binding, with some gorgeous abalone inlay thrown in because... well, why not!
The ebony fingerboard is so smooth it is almost like stone, with a nice little shaped end where it meets the body. It is fitted with Worth Brown strings, which suit it really well, and Gotoh UPT planetary tuners. If you're unfamiliar with these, they're top of the range geared tuners, that look like compact friction pegs - smooth as butter. The nut width is a spacious 37mm.
And then the sound, which is clear and resonant - with the lightweight build allowing the trebles to pop, against a backdrop of richness. There are subtle harmonics which sing out over the top of your tunes to give that shimmering koa sound, in spades. Add in a spacious 37mm nut with a relatively flat profile and it is super-playable too.
The Kiwaya KPC-5K, made in very limited numbers, is equipped with a good quality hard case. It is luxurious, but it is a stunner in every way.
