This Millar BR-240WG concert ukulele is an unusual one as it is made from all solid rosewood. Dense rosewood is common for the back and sides of a ukulele but for the top to be rosewood too is unusual. The result though is really interesting, with a really pleasant mellow tone, and a touch of sparkle sitting on top. It’s about average for volume, but the sound is definitely at the warmer end of the spectrum, while retaining enough clarity to still pick out your melodies nicely. Picked notes are harp-like and full, rather than crisp, lending itself well to chord melody. If you only play chords, the softness of the sound would really bring a warmth to your playing.

The deep brown Bolivian rosewood has a nice grain, and is set off by ebony and maple binding on the body, and a soundhole rosette of the same material. The tuners are very good quality Der Jung gold geared unnits with black buttons, and Worth Clear strings are fitted (although I suspect these are a slightly thicker gauge to the standard Worth CM set, which accentuates the rich, smooth tone).

Millar’s nut width is a standard 35mm, which is fine by me, and features their “so simple why don’t more people do it” slightly flattened portion of the neck under the first fret, where your thumb is usually anchored for standard chords. This gives you a good basis to cleanly hit the frets at the lower end of the neck.

This BR-240WG is certainly a more unusual ukulele, but its mellow nature would present a different choice in the tapestry of sounds achievable by even the most avid collector. (That’s fancy way of saying that even if you’ve got loads, this one will likely be quite different!)
