Millar Custom All Solid Cypress Concert Ukulele
This is a one-off, all handmade concert ukulele, made entirely by Millar’s head luthier in Taiwan, using their prized native tonewood, Taiwanese cypress.
Cypress gives a similar tone to cedar in some ways, but is a stiffer, harder wood, making is suitable for the back and sides of this concert ukulele too. It looks pleasant, and different, with its golden hues and light wood grain. This custom Millar is decorated with maple binding and mother of pearl inlays around the body and soundhole.
The uke is fitted with excellent quality Gotoh UPT geared tuners. It has clear fluorocarbon strings which project well, with excellent clarity - and for all that forward brightness, the sound profile also includes a really nice softness and warmth creeping into the mix.
It is a uke that begs to be picked and it is extremely comfortable to do that. The nut width is 35mm, but the light gauge strings and far from stingy string spacing make it feel good in my hands, for one.
This is a luthier made instrument, from a very good company. The maker is not only very skilled, he’s a lovely, warm and kind man too. I know that doesn’t make a huge deal of difference, and if an arch-villian made a fantastic ukulele I’d be tempted to buy one - but he is, as is this custom cypress concert ukulele from Millar.
