Millar Custom Taiwanese Rock Cypress Concert Ukulele
This is a uke from Millar’s custom shop, who work on producing interesting one off ukuleles like this concert uke, made from Taiwanese Rock Cypress, with its distinctive quilted pattern. Cypress is highly prized in Taiwan, it’s what koa is to Hawaii, and they were very excited to get hold of some as pretty as this! The concert they’ve made is particularly pretty, in an almost over the top way, as they wanted to make something really special with it.
This Millar custom model has been fitted with Worth Clear strings with a low G, giving it a mellow, warm and rich sound. The bass rolls out nicely, with a sprinkle of clear treble in the mix ensuring it does sound muddy. It’s really nice - but I probably should be selling it for more (well… to be honest, I have underpriced it - cutting my margin to bring the price in line with what I think it is worth, rather than what works for me commercially). I realise I might be tying myself up in knots here but I think at this price, with this sound, this is the right figure, even though it really should be around £899 to make my sums work. To conclude, it’s a nice, gentle, rolling and warm sound, very pretty indeed, it’s just that the sought-after nature of the wood pushes the price up a touch more than I am comfortable with.
This Millar Custom concert uke has excellent Der Jung geared tuners on the slotted headstock, which has an attractive maple veneer. There’s more maple in the form of binding, which is partnered by abalone purfling. Around the soundhole, there’s a mango inlay and more shiny abalone sparkle. The nut width is a standard 35mm.
This is an extremely pretty, lovingly made ukulele, produced by Millar’s head luthier. They make things like this, when they happen upon some beautiful wood, even when I am pleading with them to concentrate on models I am out of stock of! I sort of like this though, that they’re more interested in making what inspires them, rather than what I’m asking to pay for!
At the bottom of the page there are a series of optional extras that you can consider, like strap buttons, bags and cases. One thing that’s not needed is the low G - as this has one fitted already.
