This is the Millar TA-240GE electro concert ukulele, an all solid acacia model with a fitted Mi-Si pickup system. Millar are made by a small Taiwanese company and this is a typical example of their work, a well made, very pretty concert uke with a mellow, refined tone. With the addition of the Mi-Si (which is done here), it gives the option of amplifying or recording with a truly professional bit of kit (I’m a long term Mi-Si user and love them)

The acacia used is really gorgeous with the Millar TA-240GE, especially under the flawless high gloss finish. The Millar logo looks classy inlaid into the headstock and there are even matching acacia buttons on the quality Der Jung geared tuners. The ukulele is fitted with Worth Strings, and has an average width 35mm nut - although playability is improved in my opinion by a clever neck shape, which is flattened beneath the 1st fret and provides a stable anchor point for your thumb when you’re playing regular chords.

The tone is very sweet and mellow, with a delicate, pretty sound that is rich in harmonics and pleasing to the ear. As is common with all solid acacia instruments, and their koa cousins, the volume isn’t enormous, but even at its average volume - it really sings beautifully.

The Mi-Si system is an active pickup, but one that doesn’t require batteries. Instead, it has a supercapacitor, which is charged (for a minute or two) with the supplied power adaptor, to give 8-12 hours of use on one charge. That rapid charging is great - with mine I tend to plug it in while getting the rest of my kit ready and I’m up and running by the time I’ve untangled my jack to jack leads! The sound is fantastic, so precise and clear…

With the two combining, you get a beautiful acoustic tone and the capacity to shape your sound through your amp, giving the best of both worlds.
