Ohana CK-35-8 All Solid Concert 8-String Taropatch Ukulele
This ukulele is a taropatch - so what is a taropatch? In effect it is an 8-string ukulele, differing from the standard 8-string in the fact it has a pair of regular C strings rather than the high / low C octave pair on a normal 8-string uke. This concert scale Ohana has a low and high G then, two pairs of C's, two paired E's and two paired A's.
With this string arrangement, and the all solid mahogany body, the result is a lovely, rounded warmth. The black GHS strings, once lamented but now much improved, are great too - nice and smooth, very stable and rich in tone. It is incredibly well balanced - almost like a mandolin tone but one that is rich, warm and smooth as opposed to jangly. So, not really like a mandolin at all then... Not sure why I said that!
Like the other ukuleles in Ohana's long-standing and popular 35 series, this satin finished instrument dark hardwood binding, black and white purfling and a simple soundhole rosette. This CK-35-8 has an elongated headstock to accommodate the 8 strings with nice looking tuners.
I realise that this configuration is not going to be for everyone, but it impressive that a relatively large concern like Ohana would even think to make one for those that do. Personally, I am a big fan of the format and this instrument in particular - which somehow managed to combine mellow sound and subtle, melodic brightness in a very nice acoustic package.
