Uma UK-05SC Solid Mahogany Top Concert Ukulele
Someone who is new to the ukulele would struggle to get a better instrument to start their journey than this Uma UK-05SC. How they get so much quality into something so inexpensive is beyond me.
This is a mahogany concert ukulele, with the wood in its natural, lighter state, without the dark stain we’ve become familiar with. There’s some nice grain to see - but basically, it’s fairly plain, aside from the abalone soundhole decoration. It might not be the prettiest ukulele, but with a solid mahogany top and a gig bag supplied with it, the UK-05SC is definitely an impressive deal.
The sound is well balanced. The fluorocarbon strings give it a brightness and clarity, while the solid tonewood gives some richness and impressive overtones. It plays nicely, with a nice low action at then nut in particular, and an average 35mm nut width which will be unchallenging to most players.
It says something that I can be so knocked out by the quality of sound for an instrument that, for me, is modestly priced. Yes, it’s not as good as the £1,000+ instruments I also stock, but the fact I can get excited about a uke like this says a lot for it!
