This is a fantastic tenor ukulele, handmade in England by Midlands-based luthier Chris Perkins. This gorgeous instrument is made from solid European spruce and gorgeous black walnut on the back and sides. You can see it looks lovely, and if you look at Chris’s reputation, you can rightly assume that it sounds lovely. But what is most difficult to get across is just how great it is in your hands. It really is so light… the wood used is so thin that the sound positively bursts forth. And while it’s perfectly made and stable, it’s so light when you pick it up it’s a joy to behold and a joy to hold.

The spruce top gives an immediate burst of crisp, sweet trebles, which then fill out with strong mids and pretty overtones. Plenty of volume and really nice to play, with a 38mm nut paired with a fairly slender neck profile that gives you room to manoeuvre (with the width) and space to arch your hand round to fret comfortably (with the neck profile).

There are Gotoh UPT geared tuners, which look like friction pegs but operate like geared tuners, giving the stylish headstock an elegant simplicity. The top is separated from back and sides by ebano, while the bridge is made from black walnut, inlaid with oak, and studded with ebony bridge puns. There’s a sleek looking soundhole decoration and pretty, inlaid aluminium position markers on the fretboard. That fretboard, to cap things off, is constructed from bog oak that is thousands of years old.

Chris makes beautiful ukuleles, that sound amazing and are wonderful to play. And he makes a handful each year. I think this, especially with that rarity, is worth every penny.
