With a lovely biscuit-brown solid Western red cedar top and gorgeous Santos solid rosewood back and sides, this Maestro UT-CR is a lovely looking thing. Compared to some Maestro’s Island series, you could almost argue it is relatively plain, but lets go with subtle! Especially when there’s that striking Florentine cutaway, a bevelled comfort edge, rosewood binding and mahogany and maple soundhole decoration to consider! Yes, plain sells this ukulele very short!

The saddle and nut are bone, with the latter being a more spacious 37mm, with a great set-up with World of Ukes Clarity strings that makes this a pleasure to play. The fingerboard is ebony and bound with rosewood (with delicate maple purfling), with nice clear position markers on the side of the carbon fibre reinforced mahogany neck. Completing the picture are quality Grover geared tuners.

The tone is nicely balanced, with a bright attack that punches out your melodies, giving way to some nice warmth. There’s loads of volume and plenty of sustain too. A real chime comes to the fore when you’re playing chords, which with the clarity of the trebles lends itself very well to chord melody.

The Maestro UT-SR tenor ukulele is supplied with a brown wood-shell hard case. It’s an example of how companies in the Far East can produce fantastic quality instruments. The uke is handmade in Singapore and they’re showcasing skills that, were these instruments made in the West, would surely be more expensive (even if there’s quite a price tag, it still represents good value!)
