Issue 9 marks two years of UKE Magazine, the UK's dedicated, printed magazine for ukulele players. In that time we've showcased a lot of UK ukulele talent, and a fair amount from around the world too. Definitely a 'Best of British' this time around, with Mike Krabbers and his wife Caroline, in their guise as The Hedge Inspectors, on the cover. Also interviewed are the up an coming Opera-lele, a fantastic act that blends, as the name suggests, ukulele and popular opera classics. We also continue our series of interviews with Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain members, this time around with Will Grove-White.
It may be the UK's ukulele magazine, but we still cast our eyes to what's happening in the wider ukulele world, especially at this time of year when the NAMM show has taken place in the USA. This premier music trade fair always sees the unveiling of lots of brand new ukulele models and innovations, and we had two correspondents there to find the pick of the crop. We also look at the ukulele scene in New Zealand, visit the Tropical Winter Ukulele Festival in Finland and take a look a the Ukulele Sirens project, a diverse range of female uke artists from around the world who have joined forces for a compilation album in aid preserving the world's ocean life.
There's also the results of the UKE Magazine Awards, luthier Pete Howlett's views, 5,6 and 8 string tenor ukulele reviews, CD reviews, the best ukulele gear chosen by artist Matt Stead, the history of the banjolele, a feature on a ukulele opera and a ukulele concerto that are nearing completion, record breaking Robin Evans and plenty more new and regular features too. Two years is a long time in ukulele-land, and we're delighted to reach that milestone with your support.
