The S3 soprano from aNueNue is from their affordable Hawaiian Dream series, which takes elements from their top end models, like the larger bottomed body shape, and introduces them to more affordable instruments. This S3 is a solid mahogany top instrument, with some nice features like hardwood binding, a good quality gig bag and abalone soundhole decoration. It’s not the cheapest soprano that aNueNue make, but still, at this price it is very impressive indeed.

There’s a satin finish, good quality geared tuners, rosewood fingerboard and bridge and fitted aNueNue Clear Water fluorocarbon strings. These give a little brightness alongside the smoothness of the mahogany tone for a very nice balance. While there’s still a little traditional mahogany vintage ‘bark’, the solid top brings out more resonance and a chiming quality that is very nice - really, a good all-rounder in terms of sound.

The 36mm nut is comfortable and familiar and doesn’t feel cramped, making the aNueNue S3 pleasurable to play. When you look at how inexpensive it is, it really does impress. Had it been half as much again in price, I don’t think that price would be unfair. Very good value!
