This aNueNue U1 soprano ukulele is from their Hawaiian Dream series, the company's affordable entry level range. Of course, it's not as good as their £1000+ models, but what they've learned making those top end instrument has gone into the making of their simpler models, making a very impressive sounding instrument for the price.

The U1 soprano takes the body shape of other aNueNue models, with a slightly wider lower bout (or a slightly big bottom if you prefer), with laminate mahogany and a satin finish making up the body. While some laminates can be a bit muted and inward-sounding, this one has some good volume, and a nice balanced tone. The combination of the larger body and the Clear Water fluorocarbon strings give a rounded tone with a bit of brightness too - in fact, it sounds like a solid top instrument to me.

The aNueNue U1 comes with a nice padded gig bag, good quality geared tuners and a rosewood fingerboard and bridge. It's built for economy in the looks department, with nothing in the way of visual embellishments - aside from the logo on the headstock. Maybe if I was designing it, I'd have added some binding and perhaps a more petite looking bridge - but then I suppose that would add cost, and for the money you can't argue with it!

As well as the full sound, there's some impressive brightness all the way up the neck - the A string rings clearly right the way up the neck, even at the 17th fret. I've never really ventured that far to be honest, but nice to know you can if you want to!

There are some other good instruments at this price - the Kiwaya KSU-1 for example, but that's a lighter, brighter sound. For a fuller tone this really stands out as a bargain. It sounds like it's solid mahogany - and while it's laminate so that is not the case, the string / body size combination really gives that effect.
