aNueNue US-110 Green Bird All Solid Mahogany Soprano Ukulele
This is the aNueNue US110 soprano ukulele, an all solid soprano ukulele made from South American mahogany, with traditional materials combined with the company’s sleek, modern-classic bird series design.
aNueNue’s Bird Series ukuleles have long been thought of as a perfect example of the modern trend of ukulele making. Vibrant, sweet-sounding instruments, very much of the current age. They’ve rightly atracted plaudits from their long sustain, impressive bass response and strong, melody-carrying trebles. This was great for players, like me, who like to play in a modern way, but didn’t leave a great deal for the traditionalists out there who, in a perfectly valid way, would prefer a nod back to how ukuleles used to sound. With the Green Bird, there’s something with everyone, a harmonious marriage of old and new which combines the best of both worlds.
The US-100 from aNueNue has a lovely rich sound, with a traditional mahogany soprano bark, but with a smooth, sustaining warm finish. It has plenty of volume, particularly for a small instrument like this, and while that backdrop of richness is key, there’s still lovely clarity in the upper register to make sure your melodies are carried and not lost in the deeper, darker character of the solid mahogany.
Given a satin finish, it also differs from the bulk of the bird series range with the string choice - aNueNue’s Green Planet strings. These are flurocarbon, but with a more mellow character to them. Still silky smooth, they lean towards a nylon string sound but still sustain well and are capable of punching out some brightness when you dig in. They’re green. There’s a hard case which is green. And there’s a stained panel at the bottom which is also green. Just in case you were wondering why they’ve called this the Green Bird ukulele, and not the Brown Bird!
This soprano has a 36mm nut width and is fitted with fantastic Gotoh UPT rear-facing tuners. While it has the aforementioned hard case, if you wish to add common extras like a strap button or strap, you can find those at the bottom of this page if you scroll down.
I like aNueNue in that their new designs have real thought put into them. They actively develop new models based on points of difference, rather than slapping out another each week that has a bit more decoration, or a different colour. And the build quality is fantastic, as is the sound. If you like a bit more darkness in your soprano, and like a tradtional leaning without going ‘full on Martin mahogany soprano replica’, the aNueNue US-110 Green Bird soprano ukulele is one to seriously consider.
