Kanile’a Islander AS-4 Wide Neck Soprano Ukulele
For those who are attracted to the idea of a soprano, but want more room for their fingers on the fretboard, the Kanile’a Islander AS-4 is a good option at a budget that’s worth a punt if you’re thinking of it for an experiment! The AS-4 has a pretty, laminate acacia body, making it reminiscent of the koa you’d find on Hawaiian manufacturer, Kanile’a, but with a fraction of the cost – given they make their Islander ukes in the Far East.
The nut width is 38mm, which makes it good and roomy – which is a specification not found on too many sopranos, giving those with larger fingers or who are used to larger scale ukes a good, affordable option.
The sound has a mellow edge, typical of many laminate instruments – but it’s not a million miles of solid acacia models – giving a bit of the feel of a traditional Hawaiian instrument, for a more budget-conscious price bracket.
