LoPrinzi Model B Wide Neck Black Limba Long Neck Soprano Ukulele
This long neck soprano ukulele is made by Donna LoPrinzi in Florida, using all solid Black Limba. The ‘black’ comes from the figuring, which is dark… and is different from white limba where the figuring is light. I know this sort of detail is pretty irrelevant in a ukulele description but I wanted to know why Black Limba isn’t black. Well, now you know now as well. Anyway…
This luthier-made instrument has a traditional soprano shape body, paired with a concert scale - giving you some nice soprano ‘bark’, with a fingerboard with a little more space between the frets. This extends to the width too, where this ukulele has a 38mm nut width. So it’s a bit like a soprano made for someone with larger hands. (Although you don’t have to have larger hands as 38mm is only 3mm wider than standard, so it’s not a radical change).
This USA made long neck soprano uke is fitted with fluorocarbon strings, and effective friction pegs. These are good quality and traditional looking, although if you’ve not used them before, they make fine tuning a little more of a delicate exercise. Not hard to get the hang of, but a little more of a challenge than with gears.
This ukulele has a nice, sweet chiming sound and is extremely playable. I do think Donna puts a lot of effort with the set up. I know this as she leaves me with nothing much to do - a welcome change!
