I have seen many gorgeous ukuleles in my time, so even when something is nice, I can often moderate how impressed I am. ‘It’s X pounds, so it should be good’, I might say to myself. But there are other occasions, like with this Millar custom ziricote soprano, when all reason goes out of the window and I’m just instantly in love. With its perfectly balanced warmth to brightness ratio, this soprano has fantastic sustain, a beautiful resonance and a pretty tone that, if they had emotions, would make many of the ukes I stock cast envious glances towards it.

Made in the small Taiwanese company’s custom shop, this soprano uke is made from dark chocolate brown ziricote, with a maple neck, maple binding and mother of pearl inlays around the body. It is fitted with fluorocarbon strings and good quality Der Jung geared tuners. With it’s slim top boud and pinched waist, it’s gracel, diminutive and yet blessed with excellent projection and volume. Ziricote is fairly dense, so despite it’s small form, it feels quite solid, and yet the tone can be light and effortlessly projecting. The 35mm nut is standard, and feels fine for me (who has large hands), as that’s what I learned with, so I am not complaining here either.

Having opened the box containing the first model, within minutes I was in touch with Millar pleading with them to make more. When you’ve played many hundreds of models, it does take something very special to really jumpt to the fore and capture my imagination completely. This Millar custom ziracote soprano has done just that.
