This signature model is made by Millar, a small company in Taiwan, who have been making waves in the UK with their commitment to quality and willingness to innovate. While Phil and I have been talking about this project since way back in 2014, the ease of working with Millar Ukulele, and their sheer enthusiasm for the project made them an obvious choice to work with.

The Millar PD-210MN soprano has been made to Phil’s specifications. He was looking for a classic visual appeal - a ukulele that was for playing, with clean lines and unfussy appearance. Something that you’d not be afraid to pick up and play! The uke is made from all solid mahogany, which Millar have sourced specifically for this project. The fingerboard and bridge are clean, smooth rosewood, with a 35mm bone nut and saddle. The Der Jung tuners fitted are of great quality - with the appearance of classic friction pegs, but with gears inside. This is a great blend of looking traditional, with modern functionality - and avoids the pitfalls of putting off people who aren’t keen on friction pegs, and those who don’t like the ‘ears’ of regular geared tuners sticking out from either side of the headstock!

This PD-210MN is strung as standard with Worth Brown strings. These seem a nice match for the instrument, teasing out extra volume and allowing the trebles to shine, powerfully.

When the first prototype arrived with Phil, he sent me a message saying, ‘it’s a little cannon isn’t it!’, and that’s certainly true! It has a surprising amount of volume, with good clarity and note separation, with nice projection at the treble end to make your melodies sing. Chords, when played with gusto, blend nicely and punch out that controlled volume. However, played it a more gentle style, you hear more of the mahogany warmth coming through, while retaining a clarity that ensures your melodies stand out from that rich backdrop.

While in my own demo, in a completely different style, that ringing clarity is demonstrated (with a considerably lower skill level, but hey… we can’t all be as good as Phil!)
