Millar TK-210LL All Solid Cypress & Acacia Long Neck Soprano Ukulele
The Millar TK-210LL is a lovely sounding uke, but what actually is it? With a soprano body, it has a more soprano-like tone, but that is paired with a concert scale, so the neck is longer than a regular soprano uke. This means if you like the sound of a soprano but struggle with a shorter fretboard, this uke might be for you. Or, it could simply be for you as it’s an absolute smasher of a uke.
The volume is the first thing that hits you. This thing really sings and sings loud. The tone is really evenly balanced across the strings, with a slight crispness to the sound, but still luxurious and, especially for a soprano body, nice and rich. The TK-210LL is just one of Millar’s long neck soprano ukes build in a very similar vein. The spruce top SP-210LL is even louder than this one, with a little extra brightness. And the cedar top CD-210LL has a bigger, bolder bass in the mix. That said, they’re all loud, they all chime really nicely and they all have a fuller sound than you’d expect from the diminutive sound.
The TK-210LL from Millar Ukulele is decorated with maple, ebony and mahogany rope-style binding, which blends in (to the yellow brown of the top) and stands out (in the fact despite it matching the colour profile, you still can’t miss it!). The headstock is nicely faced with acacia and of all the logos, the Millar one that’s inlaid is the coolest (I think).
The top is solid cypress, which is matched with attractive acacia back and sides. Cypress is much prized in Taiwan, and this wood, native to the place it was made, is similar, yet distinct from cedar in its tonal properties and appearance. Millar is a small family company and they certainly like using it, given it’s status on the island of Taiwan.
Worth Browns feature on this vibrant sounding Millar TK-210LL, with a rosewood fingerboard and bridge and a 35mm nut width. And the tuners are excellent too, made by Der Jung, and with rear-facing gears. So they look like friction pegs but work like gears.
Millar’s long neck soprano ukes are really popular and really very good. The spruce top was (rightly) praised in an independent review on Got A Ukulele, and since then a number of customers have been tempted, ‘to see if it matched up to the hype’. Those comments were always followed up with a ‘yes’. It’s good stuff from Millar.
