This is a very sweet sounding little ukulele from Ohana, the O’Nina in red. It’s classed as a sopranissimo, with a diminutive 28cm scale length on a 44cm overall body ukulele. It’s made from laminate willow, with a semi-transluscent satin finish in red, that allows the pattern on the willow to show through.

With these ukes, it is perfectly possible to play with regular ukulele tuning if you’re playing along with others, but for me, it definitely comes alive when you tune all the strings up a little - to give more tension in the strings and more pop and verve to the sound. Bb Eb G C was the tuning I got to that sounded best to me - though to be honest I tuned it by ear to see what sounded best and then checked afterwards with the tuner so I could tell you what seemed ideal to me.

It is fitted with Aquila strings, a regular soprano set, but the short scale means you can tune up to higher tunings without having problems with strings snapping.

Although of course, it being tiny and it being red, the O’Nina could be viewed as a bit of a novelty… but in fact, it sounds fun and lively and plays well too - with the 34mm nut being closer to average width that the small body size might suggest. Lots of fun. Pretty and fun. Oh, and fun, did I mention fun!?
