Ohana PK-220G All Solid Mango Pineapple Soprano Ukulele
The range of Ohana mango pineapples encompasses a number of different sizes, and this one, the PK-220G is the soprano ukulele version. You’ll find other sizes on my website too, and no doubt other occasions when I’ve said the fact it’s made from mango, and is a pineapple shaped uke, means it is 2 of your 5 a day recommended fruits and vegetables. So, while I was quite pleased with that joke the first time, if you do browse the site a lot, I am afraid you’re likely to have heard that before!
These instruments deliver a sweet, rounded tone. (And no, it’s not just me associating fruity sweetness and pineapple roundness, I actually mean it!). Mango gives a sweet sound, with nice overtones, with some gentle softness in the mix, while the pineapple shape delivers a more rounded, warmer sound. True, it’s a soprano ukulele, so we’re not talking double bass levels of warmth here, but there’s a definite warm hue to the overall sound.
All solid mango is used to make the uke. In its natural form, mango is quite pale and the grain doesn’t stand out a great deal, but Ohana have opted to use a golden stain on these PK-220G’s, which gives a lovely contrast in the grain and a look that glows prettily under the gloss finish. For added sparkle, literally, there’s some attractive abalone inlays that stand out all the more as they’re alongside some dark, hardwood binding.
The nut width of these instruments is 35mm, and they’re fitted with good quality geared tuners, and a set of Aquila strings. Again if you’ve read many pages of this website before, you’ll know I favour fluorocarbon strings over Aquila’s nylon… but actually their burst of projection and brightness when you first strike the strings is quite effective here - giving way to that aforementioned warmth afterwards.
At the bottom of the page you can find common optional extras, like strap button fitting. Please note, while I can supply a gig bag for these, the hard case isn’t an option as they’ll not fit into a standard soprano case.
