Ohana SK-3 Ekolu 3-String Soprano Ukulele
This is the Ohana SK-3, a 3-stringed ukulele that was pioneered by Daniel Ho, as a beginner friendly alternative to 4-stringed ukes. The three Aquila strings it has on are C, E and A and it comes with a chord chart to help you get to grips with it. If you’re an experienced player, you might think a chord chart isn’t needed, but it’s quite extensive and includes chords which wouldn’t be possible if you had 4 strings.
To be honest having an Ohana SK-3 could be justified simply as it’s easy to play the E chord on it!
It is made from laminate mahogany, with geared tuners. The nut width is 27mm… as you’d expect this is skinnier than normal - but then you’ve only got three strings!
I had a lot of fun with this, and its great for people who want to explore the fretboard but who have trouble with barre chords - as three strings is easier than four when barreing. It also breaks chords down into their pure triad from, with just the three notes. So has musical theory applications too. (Although I confess to just launching into playing it and having fun!)
Initially this instrument was planned to come with a bag, strap and a strap button but that hasn’t come to fruition. However, the price is pretty reasonable - and that’s the sort of thing you can add with the optional extras at the bottom of this page.
