Ohana SK-50WG Solid Cedar Top Soprano Ukulele
I do like Ohana’s soprano ukes… they really seem to have a knack of getting a great mix between a peppy, vintage-style soprano bark, and a more modern, full and well-projecting instrument. The SK-50WG has a solid cedar top, which is paired with laminate willow back and sides, which look really intereting and exotic (while the crisp, even tone is generated from the less flashy, but more functional solid cedar top!)
It’s a nicely made ukulele, fitted with good quality Grover geared tuners. Aquila strings are used and while not my favourite on other sizes, I like the bite and initial burst of power they give with sopranos, or certainly this one at least. There’s a gloss finish and some some nice ovangkol binding, the same material that’s used for the fingerboard. Some pleasant, not-over-the-top rope binding is added around the top and the soundhole too.
Ohana’s are made in the main with a standard 35mm nut width, and the SK-50WG is no exception. It’s a nice light build and feels comfortable and well balanced.
