Risa LP Cherry Sunburst Long Neck Electro Soprano Ukulele
This Risa solid body, steel-string electro is called a soprano by the manufacturer, but the scale length is only just short of a concert ukulele - so those who may have struggled to soprano size will find this instrument is more like a concert neck than a smaller soprano.
These instruments are made in Europe, with the LP boasting hand-wired pickups which REALLY sound great through an amp. Acoustically you’ve got just enough volume for quiet practise, but it’s when you put it through an amp that it really comes alive - with the sounds you can get only limited by the quality of kit that you plug into.
The steel strings are much lighter on your fingers than a typical nylon-strung ukulele, meaning you need a much lighter touch. You barely have to push at all to make contact with the frets - making it light as a feather to play (well, it plays light, but the solid body is obviously a bit heavier than a normal uke!) Uke players can have a tendency to grip on a bit hard when first playing one, but actually once you get used to it, its easier to play than virtually any regular uke.
It is tuned low G, GCEA, and has tone a volume control knobs, plus a pickup selector switch. This allows you to cycle through the bridge and neck pickups, or both at once, giving you a range of tone at the flick of a switch and twiddle of a knob or two. It is also fitted with two strap buttons and comes in a gig bag.
The popular Risa LP Cherry tenor ukulele, it’s larger cousin, is always hard to get hold of - as I write, Risa have 100’s of back orders waiting to be filled… but with a) a lower price and b) that longer neck, this one should really be more popular than it is!
