B-STOCK Kala James Hill Solid Mahogany Concert Ukulele
It’s fitting I am advertising this concert ukulele close to Halloween as it’s been an absolute nightmare. Technically it’s new, made from all solid mahogany, and has been fitted with a Fremont low G. And comes with a nice gig bag. Sadly the gig bag is the nicest thing about it.
I got an order for an electro acoustic model and went to the shelf and found that what I actually had was this acoustic one. No matter, I could fit a Double C1U pickup instead which would probably sound better. The customer agreed and I proceeded. Unfortunately it didn’t work out as planned - the G string was very quiet (or the C massively boomy), whatever I did. It just seemed not to resonate properly in that area. I changed the pickup. I changed the saddle. I used shims, made a new saddle, made the action really high just to see if there was a lack of pressure on the piezo. All to no avail. It just emitted a dull ‘bong’ noise, like a sound effect from a horror film. ‘Bong!’, a zombie takes a lumbering step towards you. ‘Bong!’, and another. And then ‘BOOOOM’, the C note comes at you so forcefully you jump out of your chair.
I have had to come up with another alternative for the customer. And leaving the pickup in was a waste. It works fine just not in this. So that will live to fight another day, escaping a terrifying eternity stuck inside this horror-inducing ukulele.
To be perfectly honest, even acoustically it sounds very ‘plinky plonky’. I can’t put my finger on why. And now I’ve drilled a hole in it (which remains), I can’t send it back. Hopefully the hole will let the evil spirits out. The nylon strings don’t help. I can only assume James Hill really likes tuning with great regularity.
I am selling this at what I think the sound of it warrants. I remember a ‘Not the Nine O Clock News’ sketch where there was a satirical sketch which went, ‘nice video, shame about the song’ - in response to pop music being overly dependent on videos despite the music not being up to much. Well this one is more, ‘nice gig bag, shame about the uke’.
In the UK, delivery is included. Either by DPD, or by witches broomstick.
There are ‘Friday afternoon ukes’ from time to time. This one is from Friday the 13th. Ghastly.
Please note - items in my special orders section can only be ordered online, and can't be tried in store. Also, they're available to UK customers only.
