Millar Custom Handmade All Solid Hawaiian Mango Tenor Ukulele

Sale Price:£899.00 Original Price:£1,399.00

Note - this uke has a small flaw on the side markers on the 12th fret. I spotted this, took it off sale and meant to then advertise it as b-stock, and promptly forgot to do it… for 6 months! I have another being made and Millar are doing me a great discount on it, so I am selling this off at a really good price. It is fitted with a low G.

This is a custom tenor ukulele made by Millar's top luthier at their small workshop in Taiwan. I don't need to tell you how beautiful it is as you can see for yourself, but I will anyway... it's beautiful!

It is made from all solid mango from Hawaii, with an exceptional flaming and intense grain. Millar go in for rope binding a lot, which some love and some don't (I love it), but with that complexity of wood grain, the rope inlays around the body blend in nicely against the maple binding. Around the soundhole, an iridescent layer of mother of pearl surrounds another intricate ebony and maple rope inlay.

The Millar logo is a classy addition to the modern looking, mango-faced slotted headstock, and inside the soundhole there's the Millar logo again, on a piece of shaped wood in the form of a wing in flight. Class, lots of class!

I was nervous as, while every Millar ukulele I've tried to date has been lovely, this one was at another price level - so I was nervous and excited in equal measure as I opened the box. At the first glimpse of that gorgeous tonewood, I was hooked, smitten and pressed on with my investigations with renewed confidence.

The ukulele feels lovely in your hands, without an oversized body, and a lovely neck profile leading to a 35mm nut. My own uke is the same so this suited me down to the ground.

Frustratingly, at the time of writing I had an injured finger with a split nail, making it really painful for me to play. But that pain disappeared as I played a few chords and listened to the sumptuous tones, sweet sustain and smooth, deep wash that issued forth. Actually, I'm lying, it still hurt but I didn't care!

As you play, the sound comes forward in rolling waves. There are lovely harmonics in spades and... and... I don't know how to describe it... it's back to that word beautiful again! You often hear the term 'harp-like' about a ukulele term, but this is the closest I've found. This handmade Millar tenor ukulele take its place at the top table of superb quality instruments.

To complete the picture, this tenor uke has a bone nut and saddle, handsome aged brass effect Der Jung tuners and clear fluorocarbon strings.
